Phase 1 / Early Age Treatment
In some cases, early treatment may be needed to correct the bite. This is generally the minority of cases as the majority can be treated in one singular phase usually around 11-12 years old. However, in these cases there may be red flags that need to be addressed prior to further development of the child. These can be dental but are often growth and skeletal in nature
This is where the specialty of “Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics” will often focus on the latter half. This may be to prevent undersized or oversized jaws. This could be to better match the growth of the jaws together. Sometimes it is as simple as better preparing space for incoming teeth to prevent impactions (teeth stuck under the gums and bone), or to help manage space and crowding to try and avoid extractions or limit full treatment time and complexity in the future for the child.
The AAO recommends an exam by 7 years old. Often the child will not be in need of treatment and diagnostics and growth monitoring will be performed to assure development stays on track. In the case of a major concern Dr. Patenaude will walk you through the plan for addressing it and the long-term plan for your child.
